e interpretation of Irish literary experience (however de ned) should not forget that, as Robert Welch has observed, “the religious instinct is a permanent feature of Irish writing”. is essay offers both some introductory methodological remarks about the relationships between literature (in English) and religion, and the analysis of a reasoned selection of eects produced by Welch’s “religious instinct” on the ‘writing practice’ of a series of emblematic texts of Irish origin: e.g., a speech by Mary McAleese (a former President of the Republic of Ireland) and some relevant passages from works written by Irish writers in the last decades (Michael Longley, Frank McCourt, Roddy Doyle, Sebastian Barry, Joseph O’Connor, Seamus Heaney et al.).

is article investigates new aspects of the hypertextual connections existing between John Ruskin’s literary production and Marcel Proust’s masterpiece À la Recherche du Temps Perdu. e study focuses on Ruskin’s role in the development of Proust’s style according to the textual evidence le by the French author in his translations of e Bible of Amiens and Sesame and Lilies: in his prefaces and footnotes the translator foreshadows crucial points of his future work, acting as if the main text were the cue to test his own style and artistic convictions. Proust’s ‘digestion’ of Ruskin’s works is a long process carried out in two steps: rst of all, he acts as a critic providing quotations of other relevant texts and comments on the author’s linguistic
choices, use of rhetoric and ideology; thereaer, in his major novel written in the following years, Proust’s re ections inspired by Ruskin come to the surface as the foundations of the literary cathedral represented by À la Recherche du Temps Perdu. is can be witnessed on four levels, which
are all fundamental to Proust’s novel: structure, plot, rhetorical pattern and metatextual analysis. In this context, Ruskin served as a model and his concrete presence in Proust’s novel cannot be ignored; nevertheless, our purpose is to emphasize the importance of his texts as a means through
which Proust’s artistic consciousness could shape itself in the constant stylistic comparison allowed by the translation. According to this perspective, Ruskin is more a pretext than a master to him. The conclusions of our study stress the peculiarity of Proust’s hypertextual experience as a translator,
a critic and an artist looking for a thoroughly original and eective style.

is essay presents a metaphonological analysis of a dialog between Peter Verchovensky and Stavrogin from the novel Demons by F.M. Dostoevsky, according to the de nition of ‘metaphonology’ given by Sergio Cigada in 1989. Metaphonological forms of each character are hereby isolated and
classi ed according to the sovrasegmental tracts of rhythm and volume. is way some nuances of  ctional communication in Dostoevsky’s novel are reconstructed, which are read in the light of his theatrality and of the coexistence, declared by the author himself, of tragic and comic aspects.
In the end the author proposes some solutions for the Italian translation of the metaphonological
text.

If, for Charles Baudelaire, to compare means to “draw from the inexhaustible well of universal analogy” thus to reveal the connections which constitute the aims of a man or an artist’s life, we can begin to understand the prominence of the comparative gure in his poetics. Distinct from
the metaphor, to which it had been connected throughout the centuries, this gure, through the use of ‘comme’ [simile] – which, according to Meschonnic’s de nition, is the source of new relationships – is characterized by con gurations and speci c potentialities. All of these elements
allow for the distortion of – and recreation of – reality, thanks to the formation of new relations between them. Subjected to the ‘scienti c’ analysis of language established by the symbolist writer, comparison is invested with a poetic power that engenders new meanings. e most original of these will be analyzed as they appear in Les Fleurs du Mal.

From a purely structural point of view, any language (be it a prestigious cultural language or a dialect anywhere in the world) is perfect. In theory, each linguistic system has its own phonological, morphological, lexical and syntactic systems, which are perfectly functional. The notion of ‘imperfection’ or, better, of ‘inadequacy’, can be attributed to a linguistic system when we analyze its ‘potentialities’ from a sociocultural point of view. The more a linguistic system may be defined as ‘perfect’, the more the sociocultural areas in which it can be used. In this regard, the notion of ‘architecture’ in linguistic systems proves very useful: it is a powerful theoretical device that allows us to seize, thanks to linguistic parameters, the segments ‘composing’ the system and determining their position in an ideal linguistic space.

The paper focuses on some questions related to the Italian football terminology according to the investigation methods of historical linguistics. Starting from my contribution of 1991, I try to examine some changes in the language of football in the last twenty years. The following points are discussed: 1. Football terminology in Wikipedia. 2. Ephemeral words in the language of football. 3. Italian and other languages: some comparisons. 4. Palo e traversa (vertical goal and crossbar). 5. Foreign words in Italian (and Italian loanwords in foreign languages). 6. Neologisms in the language of football . 7. Goals and derivatives. 8. To dribble and derivatives. 9. The type ‘finalissima’. 10. The type ‘facitore’ and other derivative words (nomina agentis) in -tor. 11. Conclusions.

We analyze in this contribution the usage of German nämlich in oral dialogical communication and its possible translations into Italian. Our study – based on the FORLIXT multimedia database – adds new findings to the results of previous research which was carried out mainly on written texts or self produced examples. We document a very flexible and differentiated usage of ‘nämlich’, which discloses new features and special communication strategies in dialogic interaction beyond classifications proposed so far. Richness and flexibility also show in the dubbing of film dialogues from Italian to German, in connection with specific requirements of multimedia translation.

This article outlines German thought on the Italian language during the 17th and 18th century. It is shown that during the Baroque and Enlightenment periods the Italian language is controversial, is referred to metaphorically and is frequently the object of value judgements in public discussion. A lexicographical project regarding language thought in German-speaking countries is presented. Leaning on an innovative and lean lexicographical structure, the purpose of the project is to provide a text-immanent interpretation and documentation of thought regarding languages and dialects during this period.

New opportunities of global cultural exchanges stimulate reflection on religions and cultures, both in European and in Asian context, and urge to include references to ancient traditions and to contemporary anthropological theories. Not only Jewish, Christian and Muslim traditions, but also metaphysical and mystical thoughts from Greece and India, should develop deeper dialogue with Chinese values of Confucian and Taoist origin. Other contributions to the same effort for shared responsibility in facing the challenges of today’s society, could come from many streams of scientific and humanistic studies, from Buddhist traditions and from historical research.
DOWNLOAD dell'articolo Christian Plantin, Ethos, persona e autorità
What is ethos and which role does it play in argumentation? Beyond the relevant connections between ethos and logos (ethos consists mainly of a discursive process constructing the person) and between ethos and pathos (ethos necessarily moves), the present contribution makes its start from the polysemic uses of the word ‘ethos’, which seems to have taken the place of the word ‘character’ in the lexicon of argumentation. We analyse ‘the person’ from three points of view: first of all, as a ‘source’ of discourse, ethos may play the role of a piece of evidence, persuasive as far as the person
appears to be expert and honest. So we study the distinction between technical ethos (a result of discourse) and extra-technical ethos (charisma). In the second place, the person is the ‘subject’ of discourse implying specific (topical) lines in discursive construction. Finally the person is the ‘addressee’ of discourse: auditory character determines premises and arguments. Critical models refuse authority as poisoning the well: we take up the challenge of thinking of argumentation as an activity ‘in context’ in order to determine the conditions of an acceptable use of authority. In order to do so, we shall speak against an invasive rhetoric ethos, i.e. against authoritarianism. Context makes us aware of specific social conditions, such as legal norms, which bind by the force of conventional institutions.

Aristotle made a distinction between poetry and rhetoric because the former concerns what is possible and the latter facts. One can, however, note points of contact between the two disciplines. Poetry can indeed argue and, in epideictic speech, is aligned with rhetoric on the need to promote the values of beauty. Besides, Aristotle recognized that “thought” and “ways of expression” equally characterized both. This provides above all a global, highly flexible vision of language, solving the conflicts, as one can see especially in rhetorical figures. Not only does the ethos-logos-pathos trio enable one to define rhetoric conceived as “problematological” in M. Meyer’s words, but it also applies to all linguistic functions, so that one can see poetry as a branch of rhetoric or both as the two poles of the same linguistic activity.

The paper is a case study in semantics of conjunctions treated as markers of semantic relations between discourse units. The variety of uses, that grammarians called «specific senses» of the main Russian coordinate conjunction и (“and”), is explored from this perspective. The rhetorical relations (RR s) from the Rhetorical Structure Theory of Mann and Thompson are used as a meta-language for the description of conjunctions’ meaning. The wide spectrum of RRS compatible with the use of и is described and it is demonstrated that in general a «specific sense» of the conjunction in a given compound sentence can be correctly interpreted only in the context of a larger discourse unit.

In the paper it is assumed that the propositional content of a question and the range of the relevant answers to it are understood with the help of pragmatic factors. Following Kazimierz Ajdukiewicz and Roman Ingarden, two fundamental components of the question content are distinguished, i.e. the datum quaestionis and the obiectum quaestionis – the latter consisting in a variable ranging over a research domain. An analysis of concrete questions (both yes-no questions and wh-questions) from a corpus of written texts is made and a Gricean inference model is applied to show that the research domain is determined according to the context and the range of relevant answers is established at the token level.

It explores dictionary definitions of these words, and investigates their collocates both in reference corpora for English and Italian and in specialized corpora of opinion articles from the press in English and Italian. While the adjective appears to be semantically neutral, it collocates with both positive and negative words. In the context of military conflict, corpus investigations reveal increasing scepticism on the part of opinionists in English and Italian newspapers as regards the good intent of ‘humanitarian’ interventions.

Through the analisys of the attitude of the two lovers in elegy XI , The Bracelet, this essay aims at highlighting how their behaviour reproduces on the cultural level the negotiations typical of the rising market economy, so that they represent in Donne’s vision the modern allegory of love. This ‘quantitative’ mercantile pattern recurs also in the next love poems, constituting one of the crucial imageries by which Donne represents the proteian, precarious and imperfect nature of the love relation. Such mercantile imagery, alluding to the cultural influence of the market relations, redefines at the same time the autonomy of Donne’s love sphere, showing that it is not so exclusive

The article will consider Austen’s Mansfield Park focussing principally on the descriptions and events connected to Sotherton Court, Mr Rushworth’s house. The novel dedicates large attention to the plans for improving Sotherton’s park including interesting observations on the fashion for landscape gardening and the different attitudes of the characters involved. So, the article will open with a general introduction on the situation of landscape gardening at Austen’s time and will then perform a detailed analysis of the elements described in the novel. The second part of the article will move from the consideration of the park as locus amoenus, the place for pleasure, to analyse the visit to Sotherton Court as narrated in chapters 9 and 10 (volume I). The episode depicts the main characters as, during the visit to the park, indulge in improper behaviour protected by the privacy of the wilderness and the ha-ha. The analysis will show how this single episode metaphorically prefigures the development of the plot and provides, at the same time, a moral judgment on the characters’ behaviour.

After a brief account of the film’s genesis and the historical and cultural context in which it was produced, the paper goes on to examine some examples of the way the director chooses and uses his pictorial references from the Renaissance: the composition of the frames, the description of the main and minor characters’ physical aspect, and the style of the costumes. Another – and not less important – purpose of the paper is, to hopefully contribute to the rediscovery of an outstanding Shakespeare film which today is virtually forgotten.

The article, starting from the premise of the importance of the concept of ‘body politic’ in the work of Shakespeare and of how it is intrinsically tied to the actual physical body and its diseases, examines the way in which the feud, in Romeo and Juliet, becomes the analogy, within the microcosm of Verona, of the political and social conflicts in the macrocosm of the England of the time. The study evidences the way in which the presentation of the feud in this tragedy makes use of the parameters and effects typical of a disease and of its sequelae and it traces the consequences of this on the characters of the play and their choices. Moreover, the article analyses how the feud also becomes the interface and articulation of three fundamental metatheatrical assertions in the introductory sonnet of the Prologue.

The core of the education given in Western schools was until recently unmistakably classical and literary. People believed that one couldn’t become a gentleman and take places of responsibility if one didn’t have a liberal education. The past two centuries, however, have seen the gradual erosion of the classical ideal. At the same time, the very term ‘classic’ has triumphantly entered commercial language and the spirit of consumer society. Rescuing the classics from the wax museum to which they have been confined, also with the acquiescence of too complacent teachers, might prove far more important than expressing a mere aesthetic preference for some books over others.

Preliminary findings show that in both these conversational domains, I mean is usually employed in utterance mid-position, and it generally serves to clarify previous statements. In the dubbed Italian versions of the movies, it is often lost in translation and the functions it performs in the original American movies are sometimes changed. Nonetheless, its most common function, which is the clarifying one, is still kept via compensating strategies.

This article is about a particular intersemiotic transposition, which is a translation of a message in various coded expressions. A good explanatory example for our case study is the romance La Dame aux camélias, written by Dumas the son, under the theatrical, musical and filmic point of view. After a small introduction on the concept of intersemiology, the author extends the analysis of each translated event by considering analogies and similarities between the different languages taken in consideration. The analysis of the language, may it be textual, visual or musical, is at the basis
of a comparative criticism, which looks for relations between different semiotics. In conclusion, it recognizes the conceptual identity of the message, regardless of the different expressed signs.

The exegetical analysis of The parable of the good Samaritan (Lk 10, 25-37) made by J. Ratzinger in his book Jesus of Nazareth (2007) offers a personal reading of the evangelical passage. It highlights the intensity and profoundness of a downright interior course. In this course, expressed through noteworthy linguistic-rhetorical expedients, the author identifies himself with the protagonist of the narrated episode in a crescendo of interweaving voices and perspectives (I, we, we all, everyone). The three introspective levels of this interior path are the stylistic mirror of the author’s personal plunging into three different points of view: the narrator (the evangelist Luke), the protagonist of the parable (the Samaritan), and the holistic perspective of God becoming neighbour in Jesus. Readers are invited to identify themselves in this personal course. The rhetorical expedients, with which Ratzinger reads Jesus’ answer offered in the parable, help the reader grasp the semantic nuances contained in the evangelical text. These nuances disclose the purpose of the “informative act” inherent in the evangelical teaching, which is becoming a “performative act”, challenging readers to give their free personal answer.

The premise that explains the advantage and precocity of the reception of his new ideas at an international, but above all national level, is the fact that he perfected his academic scholarship and training in Germany. The Archive of the Università Cattolica conserves interesting traces of the scientific and human fellowship between Gemelli and Bühler, which began in 1911 in Munich

The paper is devoted to the connection established by Trubeckoj and Jakobson between their phonological theories and Othmar Spann’s holistic views. Two passages from the Travaux (1931) are taken into account in which the two linguists make use of Spann’s terminology. Spann’s name is mentioned by Jakobson, whereas Trubeckoj merely points to the fact that his own theorizing meets the requirements of the “modern scientific tendencies”. That this remark refers to Spann can be evinced only from the terminology used by Trubeckoj in describing the kind of theory he has developed. Further evidence concerning the connection to the Austrian scholar can be found in Jakobson’s letters and notes. These documents do not prove that Spann influenced Trubeckoj’s and Jakobson’s phonology. They rather demonstrate how the two great linguists were aware of Spann’s ideas and considered their own phonological theories to be consistent with his holistic methodology.

The paper presents existing research on aspect acquisition in Romance and Slavic languages learned as L1 and L2. It includes also works concerning ‘incomplete acquisition’ of American Russian. All learners exhibit a striking regularity when acquiring aspect in both groups of languages: they first learn perfective aspect with past tense telic verbs and only later on do they extend it to atelic verbs, whereas the imperfective is used in the initial stage with atelic verbs and then with telic ones. Such studies demonstrate that both the lexical classes distinction and the separation between lexical and grammatical aspect are cognitively motivated.

The article stems from the observation of the most common mistakes made by Slavic learners when using the past tenses of Romance languages. The aim of the article is to show that the majority of these mistakes is due to a wrong identification between the Slavic category of perfect and imperfect aspect and the categories of tense and aspect in the Romance languages. In spite of the similarities they display at the level of the parole, they are structured according to different principles at the level of the langue: Romance languages focus on whether an action has occurred before the time of reference vs Slavic languages, which focus on the result of the action.

The author’s arguments strongly indicate that tense anteriority is of primary importance for the French verb’s categorial system as it is the case for the aspect opposition in Russian. That is why the system of equivalences suggested by the French linguists: simple tenses of the French verb – imperfect aspect of the Russian verb and composed tenses of the French verb – perfect aspect of the Russian verb, covers only 90% of the cases. The other cases do confirm the author’s statement about the primary significations of the verb categories in the compared languages.

The aim of this paper is to demonstrate that aspectuality and temporality have scope over the entire predicative relation, giving it aspectual specification which is integrated in the temporal frames of reference by specifying the relations therein (concomitance, anteriority, posteriority, succession,…). The discussion will be conducted, in line with cognitive linguistic research, within the theoretical topological framework inherent in the topology. The paper starts with a sketch of the important distinction between ‘state’, ‘process’, and ‘event’ and of the notion of boundary which is relevant to the analysis of aspectuality, then moves on to some aspectual values denoted by the Imperfect and the Aorist in Bulgarian and the Imperfect and the Passe Simple in French. It shows that grammatical tenses must be explicitly linked to basic notions such as stability, change, process, transition, etc. which take on specific semantic meanings depending on the type of temporal reference anchoring (speech act, deictic temporal reference, non deictic relative temporal reference).

This paper introduces an Actional classification of Russian verbs, based on verbal clusters ( Janda 2007, 2008) instead of binary oppositions, and compares it with the Actional classification of Italian verbs developed by Bertinetto (1987, 1997 ss.). This type of approach presupposes syntactical testing of Actional features (telicity, durativity, stativity etc.) of all Russian verbal stems, regardless of their possible attribution to aspectual pairs, and further, their grouping into clusters of lexically derived verbs. The comparison is thus drawn between single Italian verbs and Russian verbal clusters. The contrastive analysis is illustrated with the results of a linguistic test carried out at the Saint-Petersburg State University.

In the paper connectors are analyzed as markers of semantic (= rhetorical) relations in discourse. It is demonstrated that Russian connectors vary as to their semantic potential, the direct / indirect way of conveying the semantic relation in question, the restrictions on the discursive rank (nucleus / satellite) of the textual units they connect, on their modality and on their communicative status in terms of theme / rheme and given / new. The latter is shown to underlie the conjunction splitting. Also such formal parameters of connectors’ variation are discussed as their syntactic nature, part of speech they belong to, the degree of freedom measured in terms of variability of their lexico-syntactic structure. Restrictions on the structural variation of phrasal connectors are discussed and some of them explained.

The aim of this work is to describe the grammatical status of Russian purposive phrasal conjunctions (such as dlja togo čtoby and s cel’ju togo čtoby) on the basis of their syntactic functioning and considering the difference in behavior some of them have. Our hypothesis is that the grammatical characteristics of purposive phrasal conjunctions – in part similar to those of the simple conjunction čtoby and in part similar to those of conjunctional syntagms (such as s želaniem [čtoby]) – are determined by their degree of grammaticalization. Five main formal parameters will be used in order to define this degree.

The article is aimed at outlining a range of phenomena that can be viewed as relative relations in Russian as well as in French. Russian is characterized by the use of demonstrative pronouns introducing subordinate clauses in the main clause. If the subordinate clause precedes the main one, relative words’ scope is extended to the phrase’s scope, and semantic correlation based on the relations among quality, quantity and tense identity corresponds to syntactic correlation.

The article focuses on linguistic markers of argumentation in Russian and on the cues they can provide for the reconstruction of standpoints and arguments in argumentative discourse. The analysis of the constitutive relations of argumentative discourse is carried out within the broader perspective of Congruity Theory, a semantic-pragmatic approach to text cohesion which allows to identify the specificity of argumentative speech acts. Particular attention is devoted to the analysis of the argumentative speech act of conclusion and of the modal marker used in Russian for its linguistic manifestation, described also in its contrastive aspects. Some considerations are finally developed on the possible implications of the characterization of argumentative speech acts for the description of Russian language, in particular for the semasiological analysis of the communicative functions of Russian discourse particles.

The article analyses Russian particles with textual and pragmatic functions, i.e. which create textual cohesion and express the speakers’ attitude and situational references. The particles are interpreted as markers of sequential connectives, Eddo Rigotti’s concept which indicates a predicate at textual level which includes both logico-semantic and pragmatic suppositions among arguments. The analysis of the examples concerns the particle ved’, interpreted as a sequential connective marker and its Italian translations. It is noted that Russian particles are rendered in Italian partially by discourse markers or through syntactic tools. Discourse markers include adverbs and particles (often clearly deverbal), but Italian appears to attribute fewer pragmatic-textual functions than Russian to these particles.

The paper considers ways in which predicates are treated in Russian and Italian. Comparative analysis of translations from Italian into Russian shows that the former tends to use them more widely than the latter. Predicates of propositional attitude (mainly verbs of speech as well as verbs of emotive, mental and perceptional semantics) have been analysed and classified according to their semantics; to their obligatory/arbitrary character; to the reasons for their use in the sentence. The main conclusion is that in Italian modus elements are more obligatory/manifest, while in Russian they prove to be fully or partially reduced.

This paper will provide a comparative analysis of the set of formal devices used to code the topiccomment relation in Italian and Russian. The primary focus of the analysis is to highlight how Italian prefers to encode the topic-comment relation by using those formal structures, which allow to maintain or to repristinate the basic word order of the italian sentence SVO. The analyzed corpus will consist of a number of sentences from the novel Heart of a dog by Michail Bulgakov and five of his italian translations. The aim of the paper is to show how basic word order SVO exerts influence on the way topic-comment relation are formally expressed in the italian sentence, and how his maintenance often leads to a wrong translation of the communicative component of the original sentence.

The paper discusses theories of the origin of language and of the relationship between words and things in the Classical sources, including Plato’s Cratylus and Varro’s De Lingua Latina, and compares their ideas with those of modern linguistic science. The main debate in the ancient world was whether the connection between words and things was natural or conventional. The idea of a natural connection between words and things, as proposed by Cratylus in Plato, is rejected by Aristotle, but continues, in combination with some form of conventional theory, into Epicurean, Stoic (reflected also in Varro) and modern linguistic theories.

The modern linguistics is built on ancient linguistics, in particular on Greek and Latin grammar: e.g. the concept of a sentence as truth value (i.e. as a combination of language terms enough for giving a judgement of true/false) which should be the reference point of all the parts of a speech (Chomsky, Montague) has been conceived already by Aristotle and developed by the Stoics with the ¢x…wma theory. Then starting from the criterion of ‘grammaticalization’ largely employed in modern linguistics the concept of L language (logical language) as metalinguistic approach to a language has been taken into account and connected with the ‘true/false criterion’. Such a criterion has been investigated from Mesopotamian corpora of laws and from Hittite, Greek and Latin laws and juridical activity. In this way, on the one hand, a linguistic attention (metalinguitics) has been produced and, on the other hand, some more complicated forms of language as optative, subjunctive, aspects and different syntactic structures have been developed in some languages as Vedic, Greek, Latin, Tocharian. Such an enrichment of some Indo-European languages produced on its side some adjustment in nominal, pronominal and verbal system in strong connexion with the structure of language (birth of the article in Greek and Romance Languages, derived from Latin, and, at the same time, reduction or death of nominal forms of the verb as the participle constructions and the AcI). On the other hand the problem of the changes introduced into a language as Latin is connected with the ‘core grammar’. The change remains firmly if and only if it enters in the ‘core grammar’ of a language. The ‘core grammar’ on its side can be acknowledged through the comparison of some bilingual Greek-Latin documents. Finally the doctrine of tropes and figures has been given as well as the development of the metaphor and of the group of figures connected to the “alloiosis”.
DOWNLOAD dell'articoloEnrico Cesaretti, Massimo Bontempelli e il mito classico: il caso di Gente nel tempo
This essay offers an interpretation of Bontempelli’s novel, Gente nel tempo, by examining and expanding upon the implications of the ‘modernized’ classical Greek myth of Kronos. In the light of the author’s ideas on artistic creativity, history and time, this myth lies at the very core of the work and suggests that this novel, while pointing to the destructive, devouring pattern of time known as Kronos, could also hint at a way in which an alternative, more human time (Kairos) might be salvaged and re-experienced. Bontempelli’s desired ‘recovery of the individual’ and his related aesthetic project of escape from the negativity of History may derive from an alternative ‘kairotic’ experience in which time is characterized by its qualitative rather than its quantitative nature and artistic creativity reacquires a pre-eminent, active role. For Bontempelli, I ultimately argue, the category of ‘play’, in all its ramifications, represents this sort of salvific experience.

Greek and Latin authors are frequently quoted in Freud’s works, as part of a discursive strategy which presents reconstructible development. References to the ancient world are absent or rare in the first period of Freud’s activity, until 1899: in their “Studies on Hysteria” Freud and Breuer don’t quote Aristotle, despite the fact that their ‘cathartic method’ took its name from Aristotle’s catharsis. References to Aristotle, Artemidoros and other classical authors are present in the first edition of “The Interpretation of Dreams”, and become more frequent and detailed in the following editions. Subsequently Freud indicated some Greek authors as the real precursors of his thought: Plato for his theory of eros, seen as an antecedent of the psychoanalytical libido, and Empedocles for the death instinct introduced by Freud in the last years of his life.

In Sylvia Plath’s visionary universe there are several images, fantasies and ghosts infesting – and at the same time – feeding her poety and soul. Many of them reemerge from a more or less remote past, and also from the patrimony of classical mythology, to branch off into more recent monsters, which are therefore much more dangerous. This is the case of the Gorgon Medusa, coming to the surface from literary and artistic Greek, Roman and Etruscan ancient cultures, tragically reembodying itself in the (real) figure of the godmother Aurelia – as evident in passages in her prose and poetry and, even more so, in the vibrant pages of her Journals. Since the American poet’s early production, the eternal and unresolved conflict with the mother figure determines a series of restless drives, desires, anxieties, rejections, uncertainties, in an endless and painful alternation of victories and defeats. Those obsessions and motifs find further – though different – echoes in the pages concerning the marriage experience with Hughes, doomed to end tragically, for Plath, with her disappointment at his adultery and her later suicide at the age of 30.

The present contribution is devoted to the study of German “pseudo-relative clauses”, i.e. clauses introduced by an anaphoric d-pronoun (der/die/das). Despite great analogies with subordinate relative clauses, they differ from the latter because of the second position of the finite verb (s. Es gibt Philosophen, die kommen aus Grönland). Pseudo-relative clauses are analysed and compared with subordinate relative clauses according to a wide corpus of written texts from ENHG and NHG. The two clause types are firstly examined on the ground of syntactic features (position of the clause, word class of their antecedent etc.) and then according to their semantic-pragmatic functions (descriptive, narrative, identifying function etc.). The diachronic study aims at checking analogies and differences in the use of the structures in the two historical periods. Secondly, the work points out possible factors which favour the presence of one clause type instead of the other.

This paper deals with the language-teaching model adopted within the Arabic language teaching program Laboratorio Interculturale (LABINT) held in Milan. Section 1 sketches out the sociolinguistic and educational scenario in the Arab countries, focusing on their diglossic situation. Section 2 offers a case-study of LABINT’s language-teaching model. Section 3 and 4 put forward that the learning of Modern Standard Arabic is simplified if one capitalizes on pupils’ dialectal competence, which is both lexical, as claimed in sociolinguistics (‘coexisting systems’ hypothesis) and syntactic, as assumed in the Chomskyan ‘Principles and Parameters’ model. Section 5 and 6 draft a syllabus based on this approach and present the conclusions.

This work is based on variable quantitative analysis of the students in relationship to the teaching method of the F.L.E. and it represents a study about different levels of analysis in the second language acquisition. The starting point for our investigation is a subdivision of the four categories of variables based on the Savignon theory. The studies on this topic involve Gardner and Bettoni works. They are based on student’s needs and on the interlanguage definitions of Corder, Selinker and Py; the monitor model proposed by Krashen; the difference between competence and performance based on Ellis and Barkhuizen theory. The longitudinal and latitudinal approaches analyzed by Larsen-Freeman and Long have a great importance for our studies. Numerical approach permits to define a method of teaching/learning based on quantitative consistence of the groupclass.

Among the literary works Martin Opitz (1597-1639) took as a model for his translations is a vast number of texts belonging to the wide repertoire of European Petrarchism. As for the Italian models, his Weltliche Poemata (1644) include, in addition to the German version of two sonnets by Petrarch, the translation of seven poems by Veronica Gambara from Brescia (1485-1550). The analysis presented here casts a light on the peculiarity of Opitz’s “translations” – more appropriately Nachdichtungen – that is to say a particular way of content reproduction that bears witness of a more or less conscious reinterpretation and personalization, though respecting the much formalized expressive code imposed by the original texts.

After dwelling on the analysis of the poetics of silence in the Belgian playwright, the essay is intended to investigate the dialogue in Maeterlinck’s first works. The refusal of the classical mimesis leads towards a dialogue that mirrors the dynamics of the unconscious, adding a precious further level of reading which goes beyond superficial, immediate communication to reach a universal meaning. Words seem to recover a primordial dimension and the unsaid is used to convey what the limits of language cannot express. The result is an impersonal, uncommunicative, fragmented dialogue, saturated with repetitions and echoes, deprived of logical connections and interspersed with exclamations and pauses to enhance anxiety and lack of dynamism.

In the first part of our work studies related to the literary theme of the “genetic manuscript” were carried out, now in the second, we will proceed with the analysis of the corpus. There are twenty pieces, organized in four paragraphs and arranged in chronological order (from the middle of the twelfth century to the middle of the thirteenth century) which narrate in French verse the Arthurian legends: from the birth of roman, to the works of Chrétien de Troyes, up to the “post-Chrétien” verses and other contemporary works. This analysis gives us the opportunity of putting forward certain considerations regarding the nature and the cultural aspect of the literary theme studied by us.

The essay aims to offer a thorough analysis of the influence exerted by Ludovico Ariosto’s I Suppositi on William Shakespeare’s The Taming of The Shrew through George Gascoigne’s translation, Supposes, and to underscore how crucial a painstaking study of sources can prove to the understanding, in a historical perspective, of the depth and complexity of Shakespeare’s theatre. First, the article briefly introduces the Italian commedia erudita and I Suppositi, and examines the changes to the source text made in translation by Gascoigne. Then, a survey is provided of some of the most important critical stances on the topic. Finally, an analysis of the various elements which Shakespeare borrowed from his source (characters, plot, verbal echoes) shows how he refashioned them in order to expand their dramatic potential as well as to make his comedy an apt ground for reflection on ethical themes of great topicality in Elizabethan society.
DOWNLOAD dell'articoloLuisa Conti Camaiora, “From Spenser’s Proems in The Faerie Queene to Keats’s Introductions in Endymion”
The article documents and investigates the continual interest and appreciation of the Romantic poet, John Keats, for the work of the Renaissance poet, Edmund Spenser, and in particular, for the latter’s epic poem, The Faerie Queene. It is sustained that when Keats came to make his first attempt at a “long poem”, his poetic romance, Endymion, he kept particularly in mind Spenser’s six Proems, namely, the introductory parts to each of the six books that constitute the epic. The article analyzes the thematic contents as also the poetic and political motifs present in these Proems and it argues that Keats was strongly influenced by these elements in the composition of the four introductory sections of his Endymion. The comparison shows how, in these introductions, the presence of the Proems of The Faerie Queene explicates itself not only in the way Keats imitates and re-elaborates features present in Spenser but also in the way in which he assumes contrary and contrasting attitudes.

The essay proposes the analysis of a passage from Proust’s Le Temps retrouvé concerning the last meeting of the hero with M. de Charlus, who is completely transformed by the illness and by the passing of time. The analysis is organized around the different meanings that Proust gives to the word ‘metamorphosis’: the transformations operated by Time on the body; Charlus taking the features of other characters; the continuous alterations in Proust’s tormented writing, from the drafts to the ‘final’ version. The hero needs these manifold metamorphoses to meditate on the ambiguous and baroque ‘show’ of Time’s victims; above all, the author needs them to see his work from the right distance.

In Argumentation Theory after the New Rhetoric, Frans H. van Eemeren characterizes the New Rhetoric developed by Chaim Perelman and Lucie Olbrechts-Tyteca as neo-classical contribution to the study of argumentation because of its basis in classical rhetoric and its impact on modern argumentation theory. First, he compares the New Rhetoric with Toulmin’s neo-classical contribution to the study of argumentation. Second, he sketches the impact of the New Rhetoric on the dominant approaches to argumentation: the formal dialectical approach, informal logic, radical argumentativism, modern rhetorical approaches, and the pragma-dialectical approach. He pays due attention to the modern separation between dialectic and rhetoric and to a recent attempt to bridge the gap with the help of the notion of strategic manoeuvring. Third, he discusses some problem areas that are affected by insights from the New Rhetoric, such as the study of argument schemes, and, to a lesser extent, the fallacies. Fourth, he elucidates influences from the New Rhetoric that have shaped certain problem areas: those of rationality, reasonableness and value judgements, the universal audience, dissociation, presence, and argumentation in the field of law.

Now, returning to the subject on my own, my aim is not to produce a complete catalogue of the Italian references occurring in Balzac but rather to reassemble a mosaic that, while lacking some tesserae, provides the reader with a clear idea of the features and dimensions of this literary aspect in one of the greatest eighteenth century French authors.

The first poetical works of Théophile Gautier, published between 1830 and 1838, are notably influenced by his studies and his juvenile readings; several intertextual connections with contemporary authors, first of all Victor Hugo, can be observed in these poems, as well as frequent references to poets of previous periods. Gautier had a special preference for some authors of pre-classical age, on whom he wrote a number of critical articles that were initially published in thereview “La France littéraire”, and then collected in Les Grotesques; this contribution considers some themes and images of Gautier’s juvenile poems (Poésies, Albertus, Poésies diverses) that remind of works of Théophile de Viau and Marc de Saint-Amant, two pre-classical poets whose remarkable modernity he often pointed out.

The essay aims at investigating John Banville’s experimentation with the form of the novel. The focus is on the author’s attitude towards the traditional Irish trend of literary experimentation which, though tracing its origins in a remote past and emerging in Modern age through the work of distinguished writers, identified its best and extreme representative in James Joyce at the beginning of the twentieth century. The analysis of Banville’s work implies to face two strictly connected fundamental issues in the history of Irish literature: first, the relationship of Irish writers with their history and tradition, second their relationship with the ghost of their Master (“The Dead Father”). Within Banville’s wide production, the works here analysed are just a few: Birchwood, Doctor Copernicus, The Book of Evidence. They were chosen since they proved particularly suitable to carry out the proposed investigation.

Italian is full of regional varieties. This article is focused on the Italian language in use in Switzerland (Canton Ticino) and its main aim is to point out (especially lexical) differences between school language in the Italian speaking Switzerland and in Italy. De iure no Swiss standard variety exists for Italian, but de facto many Swiss regional peculiarities can be recognized (in the examined corpus they are divided into 9 categories). The results of the present work suggest that a Fachsprachen (e.g. school language) oriented approach can be effective for pointing out differences between the Italian language in use in Switzerland and in Italy. Some dictionaries already started to underline this diathopic factor and to categorize some Swiss terms as Helvetic forms, thus leading to a sort of de iure acknowledgement of the Swiss variety.
