Abstract

The aim of this study is to investigate whether the mother tongue of Arabic affects the oral use of French by Arab learners of French as a foreign language and the level of this effect in addition to its causes. The main interest of the study is the use of flattery verbs in conversations held by groups of Jordanian Arabic speakers, French speakers, and Jordanian Arabic learners of French. The results show differences in the linguistic innovation by different groups of speakers. Finally, solutions are suggested to remedy those pragmatic difficulties in learning French as L2.
