Abstract
After a presentation of the growing importance of mountain in the work of Maurice Chappaz, this paper aims to analyze the various meanings of silence in La Haute Route (1974). The acoustic silence is indeed also poetic, connected to formal reinvention and metaphysical interrogation. It is freeing too regarding ecological and political activism. Between experience and metaphor, the silence of the mountain is so at the core of the crisis and renewal of Chappaz’s works in the 1970’s.
