Abstract

This article, of mainly methodological nature, discusses some possible future uses of the data collected and published within the project Mappatura dell’ItaloRomanzo Antico (MIRA). In fact, the download function on the website allows the final user to reuse, in accordance with the so-called FAIR principles, the quantified and geo-referenced data from ancient Italo-Romance in a series of research contexts. The present contribution focuses on GIS-based approaches to diachronic geolinguistics using the free and open-source software QGIS. The benefits and the dangers of digital tools in historical geolinguistics are illustrated by using the MIRA-maps con-cerning the outcomes of intervocalic rj, initial pl and the forms of the second degree of the demonstrative adjective/pronoun in comparison with a digitized version of Pellegrini’s (1977) Carta dei dialetti d’Italia and data stemming from the Atlante italo-svizzero (AIS), now downloadable thanks to the AIS reloaded platform (AISr)
